DATO’ MOHAMED NIZAM BIN TUN ABDUL RAZAK

He gives the very essence of our University an enormously important advantage.

Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Mohamed Nizam Bin Tun Abdul Razak was born on 3 October 1958 and is the son of Tun Abdul Razak Bin Dato’ Hussein, the second Prime Minister of Malaysia, and Tun Rahah Binti Tan Sri Noah. He is the third in the family of five sons. He is married to Yang Berbahagia Datin Khadijah Binti Tun Abdul Rahman and blessed with one son, Muhammad Nadzmi.

A distinguished graduate of Oxford University with a Bachelor of Arts (Oxon) Degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Dato’ Mohamed Nizam started his career as Manager with the Corporate Finance Division at Bumiputra Merchant Bankers Berhad. In 1984, he joined stockbroking firm PB Securities Sdn Bhd first as Director of Institutional Dealing and later as Chief Executive Officer of the group, a position he held until his retirement in 1998.

Since 1998, Dato’ Mohamed Nizam has been a value investor engaged in buyouts and private equity transactions in Malaysian companies such as the purchases of interests in manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, healthcare, property development, information technology and diversified groups. Combining his experience in corporate finance and stockbroking, he successfully brought several of his investments to eventual listing on the stock exchanges.

A corporate leader, Dato’ Mohamed Nizam previously served with distinction as Chairman, Director, Member of the Audit Committee of several major private and public listed companies in Malaysia including Public Bank Berhad, Public Finance Berhad, Cambodian Public Bank Ltd, Deutsche Bank Malaysia Berhad, OYL Industries Berhad, Tamco Corporate Holdings Berhad, Hiap Teck Venture Berhad, Delloyd Ventures Berhad, LPI Capital Berhad, Public Mutual Fund Berhad, Harrison Holdings Berhad, Kamdar Group (M) Berhad, Dolomite Corporation Berhad and PK Resources Berhad. He also served on various committees of Bursa Malaysia Berhad (formerly known as the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange or KLSE) and on its pro-tem committee which was instrumental in the creation of the Malaysian Exchange of Securities Dealing & Automated Quotation, better known as MESDAQ.

Dato’ Mohamed Nizam is currently Chairman, Director and Member of the Audit Committee of several major private and public listed companies in Malaysia and Singapore that includes Mamee-Double Decker (M) Berhad (Food), Yeo Hiap Seng Ltd (Food), Asia Experience Sdn Bhd (Tourism), Healthscan Sdn Bhd (Healthcare), Wah Seong Group of Companies (Oil and Gas) and Petra Energy Berhad (Oil and Gas). In May of this year, he was appointed as Regional Adviser to Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS).  He also serves as a Pro-Chancellor of University Tun Abdul Razak.

While sitting on various boards and committees for over 30 years, Dato’ Mohamed Nizam earned a formidable reputation for championing the cause of good corporate governance and protection of minority interests. He has made it the personal mission of his corporate life to raise by a considerable degree, these standards in every single board or committee that he has sat on.

A tireless advocate of causes who has had a towering impact in Malaysia, Dato’ Mohamed Nizam sits on the Board of Trustees of several charitable foundations such as Yayasan Cemerlang, Noah Foundation, Hong Leong Foundation, National Children Welfare Foundation, Yayasan Rahah and Yayasan Wah Seong, focusing on education, religion and children’s welfare. Through those various charitable bodies, he serves as a strong advocate in the education of the less fortunate, deserving students at all levels. Children have been the biggest beneficiaries of the Foundations. He also helped establish the Mohammed Noah Fellowship of Oxford Centre of Islamic Studies at the Oxford University.

Despite the various vital roles and responsibilities held by Dato’ Mohamed Nizam, he remains a golf enthusiast and enjoys reading a wide range of short stories, novels and subjects, as well as spending precious time with his family.

Vice Chancellor

ARFAH SALLEH, PhD

Professor Dr Arfah holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, a Master’s degree in Finance and Investment and a PhD in Accounting Education and Courseware & Systems Design. She is also a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and Fellow member of CPA (Australia).

She brings with her a wealth of experience as an academic with administrative capability and close linkage with industry and regulatory bodies.

Prior to joining UNITAR, she was the first President & Chief Executive Officer and Professor of Human Governance at Putra Business School from 2012. Leading a team that novated a former faculty of a public university into an autonomous private entity of university status administered by a not-for-profit Foundation made her among a few Malaysians with such experience. Before that, Professor Dr Arfah had been the Dean of the Graduate School of Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) besides being the Co-ordinator of the research-based PhD and MSc programmes as well as member of the UPM Senate.

Pioneering innovation in computer-based teaching of basic accounting since the late eighties, her commercialised courseware has earned her an international patent as well as several accolades. Her engagement with the accounting profession, industry and government includes: having served as a member of the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board; member of Deloitte industry-academic initiative; and advisor to the Ministry of Education in curriculum development and teachers’ training, among others.

Professor Dr Arfah has also been active in the Malaysian Higher Education accreditation scene serving before, as a panel member of the SETARA rating of universities and university colleges. Internationally, she has sat in committees of the US- and Japanese-based global business schools accreditation bodies contributing to the direction setting of member schools. She was also Adviser for the ICT implementation in accounting programme at Tampere University of Applied Science, Finland.

Today, Professor Dr Arfah advocates human governance not just as a founding philosophy to academic programmes, but to public and private sectors for implementation as a total management system. The book entitled “Human governance - A paradigm shift in governing corporations” and monograph on “Soulful Stewardship” co-authored with Aziuddin Ahmad have triggered the disruptive thinking to the conventional command control rule-based corporate standard, bringing back the need to BE-ing human.

Indeed, UNITAR is pleased to have a leader of Professor Dr Arfah’s calibre to now instill the Human Governance values to warga UNITAR – students, academics and staff – as well as our partners.
