The course critically examines the theoretical orientations which underpin print and non-print language teaching materials designed for a range of contexts. It explores the processes of production and adaptation of materials. The circumstances in which material design takes place and the criteria for the selection, creation and sequencing of texts and tasks are considered.
There will be individual and group opportunities for evaluating, adapting and creating materials, and for discussing the process and products of these tasks. The aim is that participants should demonstrate a critical understanding of the key principles addressed during the course and that these assessments should provide the foundations for materials evaluation, design and development in the participants’ future professional lives.
It will allow learners to examine and critique methods and materials for teaching English as a second language, focusing on principles of assessing student needs and choosing appropriate methods, materials and practices in developing and adapting materials in the context of specific methodologies.
