Petaling Jaya – In the spirit of celebrating cultures and the tapestries of diversity, UNITAR International University celebrated the harvest festival of Pongal on 6 February at its Main Campus in Kelana Jaya. The event which was open to all students within the UNITAR Community featured a mix of different cultural performances and traditional competitions.Â
Pongal which marks the harvest festival within the Tamil community is celebrated around the world, signifying the beginning of the new year in the Tamil calendar. It serves as a time to express gratitude for a bountiful harvest and enduring prosperity. Typically, Pongal is celebrated by boiling rice in milk, which is then offered to God, cows and then to family members.
Â
Students who joined in the Pongal celebration witnessed a string of exciting and fun performances which were organised by UNITAR’s own Indian society. The highlights of the day featured cultural performances, ‘Vilaku’ Decoration Competition, ‘Thoranam’ Weaving, ‘Kolam’ Competition and ‘Karumbu Kadithal’ Sugar Cane Eating Competition. Â
