The New Normal

No one was prepared for a global pandemic. The effect of COVID-19 on the world has been catastrophic but somehow, we have found a way to adjust. While many have lost jobs, lost businesses, and even their loved ones to this virus, Malaysians have done well in keeping the number of cases low. This was mainly due to the lockdown that was inititiated on March 18th, 2020.

For six weeks, Malaysia was very quiet. The hustle and bustle of its capital, Kuala Lumpur, was non-existent.  Slowly, the government allowed essential businesses to return to their workplace, with specific protocols of quantities, proximity, and safety guidelines.

All over social media, Malaysians stated their wants to return “back to normal”. While the vast majority are in line with this sentiment, it must be acknowledged that the normal that existed before the COVID-19 pandemic may not make a return anytime soon – not until a vaccine for the virus is found and delivered to the masses.

Instead of going back to what used to be, we will have to adjust to “the New Normal”. This New Normal will not be to everyone’s liking, but it will ensure the safety and health of our people.

Here’s a short overview of what the New Normal will look like:

  • No large gatherings (Max. 20 People)
  • Social and Physical Distancing (1 Meter apart)
  • Contactless engagement
  • Limited number of people at common areas (Shopping malls, grocery stores, etc.)
  • Virtual Mode (Conference/video calls, Online Shopping, Online Classrooms, etc.)
  • Working from Home

Again, this may take time to adjust to, and it will not be everyone’s “cup of tea”, but the most important aspect is ensuring the safety of our people. By following the New Normal, our country will at least be prepared to take on the next COVID-19.
