Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education offers students the opportunity to make a mark by contributing to existing knowledge with their own thoughts and angle of interpreting findings in a new light. Under academic supervision, an original thesis will be completed at the end of the course, using the knowledge and skills the students learnt during the programme.

Programme Entry Requirements

You must meet the following requirements in order to be considered for entry to the UNITAR Ph.D Programme:

  • Pass a Master’s Degree or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.75; AND
  • A pass in SPM with a minimum credit in English; OR
  • Pass a Master’s Degree from an institution which uses English as the medium of instruction; OR
  • Pass an internal assessment set by the university, with a minimum grade of C. The panel for the assessment shall comprise of two senior members of the faculty/ school and a representative from the English Language Department from UNITAR Foundation School (UFS) or other relevant departments. The panel is appointed by the Dean / Director of the respective faculty/ school /centres; AND
  • Pass TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 points or 6.0 in IELTS for international students. Any additional assistance will be provided by the staff from the English Language Department; OR
  • A proposal of about 500 words in English must be submitted together with all the relevant documents required for admission to the University on the registration day; OR
  • Any other qualifications recognized by the Malaysian Government; 
    a) There is no direct entry from the Degree’s programme to the Doctoral level;
    b) Qualified Degree’s candidates who enroll for a Master’s program, can apply to change their studies to a Doctorate program within (1) one year after signing for Master's program and subject to the following provisions; • Have demonstrated competence and capability in conducting research; • Rigorous internal assessment by the PPT [Higher Education Provider]; and • Approval from the PPT’s Senate

Career Prospects

The English Language Entry Requirement for Malaysian students at UNITAR International University are as follows:

For PhD Programmes:

  • A minimum of credit in English SPM level; or

  • Pass a Master Degree from an institution which applies English as the medium of instruction recognised by the Malaysian Government, or

  • Pass an internal assessment set by the University, with a minimum score of C

For M.Ed TESL:

  • A minimum of credit in English at SPM level, or,

  • A minimum score of Band 3 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET), or,

  • Pass an internal assessment set by the University, with a minimum score of C


Internal Assessment:  An oral test in the form of interview which will be conducted by a panel of interviewers consisting of two members from each Faculty and a representative from English Language department or any other related department
