UNITAR’s Chinese New Year Celebration 2025: A Dazzling Display of Culture and Tradition

On 12 February 2025, UNITAR welcomed the Year of the Snake with a spectacular Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration, bringing together students, staff, and faculty for a festive and unforgettable experience.

This year’s celebration was extra special as it coincided with Chap Goh Mei, marking the fifteenth and final day of the Lunar New Year.

The event kicked off with a thrilling acrobatic Lion Dance performance, courtesy of the Chung Hwa Wushu and Lion Dance Group. The audience watched in awe as the skilled performers scaled a 25-foot pole, showcasing agility and precision. The pulsating beats of the drums, cymbals, and gongs set the tone for an electrifying start to the celebration. To heighten the excitement, a grand firecracker display signalled the official opening of the event, filling the air with energy and prosperity.

Adding a unique twist to the celebration, UNITAR embraced the Chap Goh Mei tradition, often referred to as the “Chinese Valentine’s Day.” At the fountain area, a special activity was organised for single individuals—the Mandarin Orange Throwing. This age-old tradition involves participants writing their names and contact details on oranges before tossing them into the water, symbolising hopes for love and new connections. Laughter and cheers filled the air as students eagerly joined in the fun, making new friendships and perhaps even finding a special someone.

The Chinese New Year celebration at UNITAR was not just about cultural appreciation but also about unity, joy, and togetherness. It was a day filled with vibrant traditions, heartwarming moments, and a strong sense of community.

As we step into the new year, UNITAR wishes everyone happiness, success, and good fortune. May the Year of the Snake bring wisdom, transformation, and endless opportunities!
